what to wear

What should I wear to my photoshoot, Sara??

I probably hear that question atleast twice a week and most times I give some suggestions.  But, here is the thing.. I want the photos to reflect your own personal style so often times you hear me say “just be yourself”.  Has that gotten me into trouble?  Quite frankly, yes.  If someone told me to be myself when showing up I would show up in a pair of jeans, white tank and toms.  Most times that would work just fine, but sometimes not so much!

I want you to not try to be something you are not.  Because you know what will happen?  You will be so uncomfortable and it will show through the images!!  Not good.  So, here are a few guidelines that I think will help you when preparing for your next session {with SRP I HOPE!!} ::

What is your theme ?

Are you wanting traditional, dressy, vintage, edgy or playful?  You want the wardrobe to reflect your personalities.  Because, if you have seen any of my work you know that is what I WILL want to capture.  The in between moments are the best and I catch those when you are the most comfortable!!

Next choose a color.  With sessions involving more than 1 person dress each person in that same tone.  Not necessarily the same color.  Think of a color palette when choosing the outfits.  Colors compliment one another.  Be WARY {and, I can’t stress this enough} of shirts with logos or words on them.  And, when I am talking logos I am not talking a small Pony, I am referring to “BOB SMITH’S LANDSCAPING”, etc.  This can be extremely distracting.  I do, however , LOVE the T’s with 1 initial or number on them from etsy.  Those are adorable and photograph really well!

Say you want to go with a more traditional look of black and white.  Add a pop of color of hot pink or yellow in there somewhere.  It will make that little bit of difference to pop your images.  And, say you want everyone in a solid palette of blues and khaki pants.  Add a plaid hat in there somewhere or a yellow scarf on mom.  It’s the little things most times.

What about my engagement shoot?

What I love best are when one is in solids and the other in a fun pattern.  Be yourself but add a little “something” to make them extra special.  Fun pair of shoes, fun hair accessory, etc.  Most times the bride to be outshines the groom to be, but make sure not to take away from him completely.  Meaning, just as important it is for you to look YOUR best it is JUST as important for “Joe” to look his best.  Get your hair done.  A good time to try out your hairstylist for your big day.  Also, getting make up done is key!!

What about my maternity shoot?

Tanks with Jeans.  Maxi dresses that show that beautiful baby bump.  Dresses with fun shoes.  Fella’s in Jeans and Tee.  Simple and sweet.

What should we wear for babies newborn photos?

Naked babies are the best.  I will bring hats, wraps, diaper covers, flowers, etc.  If you want to buy something that only your sweet babe will wear then by all means I am all for it.  Best place to shop for things like these are ETSY.  My favorite shops for these items are {click on item and it will send you to the vendors etsy page} :: hats, wraps, diaper covers, flowers.  Mom and Dad should be dressed comfortable.  White solid tee is great with black pants {think knit for mom}.  Please no logos of any kind on shirts because if babies are in the arms of mom or dad they will be snuggled up close.  No need to have to edit all that stuff out if we don’t have to, huh?  And, no watches please!!  Even if you have a shiny rolex….guarantee sweet baby will be worth millions more!

What about ” Claire’s Teddy”?

I think it is so important to bring items of meaning to your shoot.  However, it’s always best to leave “lovey” at the bottom of moms diaper bag until the very end otherwise “lovey” will be in every single image.  Not sure you want that?  Always, Always, Always bring a “Mary Poppin’s Bag full of sugar” — meaning, bring items that can soothe the sweet babies or kiddos IF we need it.  Most time we do not, but there is always a chance.  Also, try not to feed them crackers right before we shoot.  Clean faces are the best!

Any other items of importance like a mother’s pearl necklace, a blanket from home, etc just bring them.  And, let me know that you would love it if I could somehow  incorporate those things in the shoot.  Don’t stress about setting up a shot with those particular items!  That’s what you pay me for.  lol

How many clothing changes should I bring to a shoot?

If you are booked for a mini, then no outfit changes.  If you have booked a full session then chances are two outfit changes would be just fine!  Sometimes even 3 outfit changes for the kiddos works out too.  If you are part of my first year package I always say up to 3.

Should I email you with my clothing ideas to get your opinion?

Well, it doesn’t hurt and it certainly helps me when planning what props to bring.  You can email me here OR straight to my email sara@saraErosephotography.com.

What are your favorite stores to shop?

Boden, Matilda Jane, Target, Gap, Etsy, American Eagle Outfitters, Anthropologie, Children’s Place and Old Navy.  There are definitely a few others but they are hit or miss!  I do love Ralph Lauren polos and you can almost always pick up one for super cheap at TJ Maxx.  The colors he chooses for his polos almost always POP in images.  I love it.

** I sure hope this helps!  But, seriously…if you have an SRP session booked and you are stumped on what to wear just ask.  Better to have a plan then to get your images back and wish you would have worn something different I always say.

XO, SR
